Nationally protected black-necked cranes in Qinghai reserve increase to 216

The number of black-necked cranes in the Qinghai Yushu Longbao National Nature Reserve in northwest China has increased to 216.

There were only 22 in the reserve when it was founded in 1984.

The black-necked cranes are Class I nationally protected endangered species, living and reproducing only in plateaus, mainly in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.


The Qinghai Yushu Longbao National Nature Reserve sits at an altitude of more than 4,200 meters and is the world's first nature reserve of black-neck cranes.
